It was Abby, in a white silk shirt with the top button undone. Both she and Lew had changed earrings. Hers had long feathers and his a little skeleton."Hi, Billy," she said as she put her arms around Lew. "Guess who's here." She nodded over his shoulder toward Cara Mae. "Why don't you mosey on over there." "Yeah," said Lew. "And make sure you mosey. No strolling." "What'll I say to her?" "Anything," Lew advised. "Tell her you love those white pants." "Don't say that," Abby broke in. "Just compliment her on her hat or something." Some Stetson, great headgear, spiffy chapeau. I tried them all as I moseyed. Then I paused a few yards away. She was inspecting each and every horse. Intensely. I inched closer. Where'd you buy that hat? I'd like a hat like that. Can I try on your hat?"What the hell do you want?" she snapped. The last thing I'd thought popped right out. "To try on your hat.""Get bent," she said.I reported to Abby and Lew.What'd you say?" Abby asked."That I wanted to try on her hat." Silence."It just slipped out, okay?""So what'd she say?" asked Lew."She told me to get bent." "Definitely promising," Lew said. "Definitely interested." "Go back and try again," said Abby, shoving me.______________________THE ARIZONA KID by Ron Koertge. Copyright (c) 2005 by Ron Koertge. Published by Candlewick Press, Inc., Cambridge, MA.

I'm not much of a writer, so I will keep this brief. I read this book when I was a teen, and it really did give me a new outlook on the way I perceived the world. At the time, I was living in a pretty small bubble in my hokey midwest town, and being a gay youth didn't give many options for acceptance or education. This book gave me a perspective on many topics that I am sure face teens today; it really touches on everything - not just gay specific topics. In fact, the book rarely touches on that - no more so than an average teen may experience in his/her youth. I found the writer to be perceptive and illustrative without being vulgar or corny - which I guess is what kept me reading.Overall, this book is a great 'coming of age' novel for young readers. I bought this book so that, when I have children, they will be able to know that the world isn't just what they see on 'reality tv' - that there are real issues to face, and real decisions to be made in life. I am sure that even adult readers can find a significant portion to relate to in this story.

It's a nice book, special for teenagers, about accepting your homosexuality... it talks something about HIV and the reality of this...Read it, it will make you see something special.

Yet another coming of age story about 16-year-old Billy who has moved to Tuscon to spend the summer with his gay uncle who has arranged for him to have a job on a racetrack so he can figure out whether he has the aptitude to become a vet. Short and bright he comes with certain self-confidence issues hardly helped when he faints in the heat after getting off the train. The subject matter is rather mature for YA though we are spared the profanity that would obviously be the argot of a backstretch. We do get immersed in the jargon of horse racing and betting and confront HIV and teenage sex. Uncle Wes is the kind of friend every boy should have as a mentor.

Entwined in the story of summer love is a tale of the young man coming-of-age and an illustration of how we are all human. Billy travels from Missouri to there is on the to spend the summer with his uncle. His plan is to get some practical experience working with animals that would provide him with a big step toward fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. When he first arrives he has no idea that his career plans will change, he will fall in love with a beautiful girl named Cara Mae, or that his gay uncle, Wes, will turn out to be the only person who can give him honest answers about life and love. Billy's story leaves the reader with no pat answers. But, then again, nobody has ever found truely pat answers for growing up. The novel provides points of departure for discussion with young adults about life, love, and themselves. It isn't a book that make every reader happy, but it can leave readers satisfied that life has more than one option.

I'm reading this for the 2nd time, and it's just as nice as when I read it the first time. I wish it was longer.
