My first thought when reading this book was, "Why hasn't a major motion picture been made about this person?" Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. The author has done a great job of research and analysis and applying what he learned to the story of this brave and honorable man. The book is well written and flows smoothly and makes one anxious to turn the page to read what happens next. I highly and enthusiastically recommend this book.

This is a fascinating book in its details. It flows very well, in a recognizable way for it's type. Maybe my 'Four-Star' rating is due to that characteristic. From the early pages of this narrative, one learns social and political complexities of La France just prior to the outbreak of the war. This was 'new information' to me and it is well worth reading: the working class realized that they always suffered in war, no matter who won. If submission brought Peace, their lot in life would be largely unchanged. War meant loss. Just as Britain had Chamberlain and Appeasement, France had superior forces in place on its borders who 'just sat and watched' while their position deteriorated.Our noble hero, Delarochefaucoulde, is the entry character into a narrative of the French Resistance, from tentative beginnings, to being nurtured by General DeGaulle and the British. Interesting lesser characters, for example, Piquet-Wickes, are given their well-deserved due in the story. This story will enthrall readers who love background on World War II efforts at freeing France. There is plenty of derring-do and plenty of understanding that 'all was not for show or glory' as patriots fought for their country.

Robert de la Rochefoucauld was born in 1923 into a wealthy family of French nobility with a long and distinguished history. His childhood was spent in chateaux and mansions across France, and he attended (apparently not very successfully) a series of elite boarding schools, at one of which he actually met Adolf Hitler. Nothing much mattered to him and very little was expected of him until the spring and summer of 1940. The Nazi invasion and conquest of France was a turning point in Robert's life as it was for so many other Frenchmen.Seventeen year old Robert was determined to fight the Germans. He made a hair-raising escape into Spain, then traveled to England where he was accepted for training in guerrilla warfare by the newly formed Special Operations Executive, or SOE. Being an aristocrat helped him navigate the upper class-dominated echelons of the British espionage establishment, and he eventually returned to France, where he took part in a series of successful sabotage attacks on the German occupying forces. It was extremely dangerous work, and he was captured several times and tortured, but he always managed to escape, often in what would now be called an Indiana Jones manner. His activities continued past D-Day into the final days of World War II, after which he returned to private life, saying little about his experiences (though fortunately writing a memoir for his family) until his death at age 80.Paul Kix had the assistance of Robert's memoir and the recollections of his children in writing this often enthralling history. Besides detailing Robert's own career, Kix also gives us a very clear and horrifying picture of what life was like in France during World War II, when brave men and women joined the Resistance at the risk not only of their own lives but those of their families as well. If, after reading The Saboteur you want to learn more about the spies and guerrillas who fought the Nazis, then I recommend Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Giles Milton or any of Ben Macintyre's histories, especially Agent Zigzag, Double Cross, and Rogue Heroes.

Sad to realize that the French army capitulated without a fight & such a large portion of the French population collaborated with Nazi Germany. It is disgusting. I am lucky to say that my family members fought in the resistance. One may wonder, not too far, how our American population would act if invaded. Hopefully, more like the English spirit. This was a good book. Thank you for reminding us not to trust our governments and a lot of their citizens.
