Review

"In On the Dark Side of the Moon, Medberry launches readers into a captivating account of the chilling, solitary moments of a devastating stroke in the middle of a cinder-coned wilderness, then carries them through the rediscovery of his consciousness and the desert he loves."—Rocky Barker, Idaho Statesman (Rocky Barker Idaho Statesman 2012-11-28)"Mike Medberry has written a slim volume of a memoir that's a victory in many ways. This environmentalist and writer—in his first book—offers to the reader a story of debility and recovery, a journey he experienced following a stroke in April of 2000 that left him helplessly lying on the rocks of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. But On the Dark Side of the Moon: A Journey Toward Recovery is more than just a book about a man struggling to regain health."—Andrew C. Gottlieb, terrain.org (Andrew C. Gottlieb Terrain.org)

Mike Medberry has written a dark and engaging account of his journey back from suffering a near-fatal stroke while hiking in the desolate Craters of the Moon ancient lava flow. This is a compelling account, from his perspective, of what it is like to experience the loss of one's self and his difficult and courageous fight to regain his life back. It is deeply personal and steeped in emotion but not mired in pity and self loathing. Medberry takes the reader though his highs and lows with deft skill and beautifully crafted prose, while interlacing his fate with the fragile environment he is committed to protect. This is a riveting read, one I found hard to put down.

Well-written journey of a young man's stroke recovery and his passion for the environment. Specifically, he describes Craters of the Moon (Idaho) in ways new to me.

Mike Medberry's legs carried him uphill to finish a half marathon the day before a clot in the 44-year-old's brain stopped blood flow, immobilizing his right side and scrambling his speech. His was the kind of stroke you want to have in the ER parking lot. But Medberry was hiking across lava at Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho. He spent most of a day waiting to be found and whisked to a hospital. Medberry "became pure observer" while wounded and waiting on the lava. He describes the stroke clearly enough that I don't have to experience one myself to feel I have a working knowledge of the condition.Recovering, Medberry learned to brush his teeth, drive, navigate phone trees, speak, and write. His struggles to organize his thoughts are heart-breaking. "…[T]he pieces of [his] brain were a blizzard of blowing pages ripped from a book." Medberry's emotional struggles are inspiring. His falling in love and recovering enough to say, "I do," are triumphs.Interwoven with Medberry's own story is the story of Craters of the Moon. He was working to expand the national monument when the stroke found him. Even after the stroke, he hiked and found peace on the lava.I enjoyed Medberry's descriptions of Idaho landscapes, but I wondered about a few points in his discussion of cheatgrass. He's correct that the exotic annual grass fuels wildfires that damage native vegetation and the wildlife habitat it provides. But I cringed when I read that cheatgrass is "[a] poison brought here by cowboys, for cows." In its native range, cheatgrass is an insignificant grass that doesn't inspire purposeful sharing. Researchers understand that the grass was inadvertently introduced to the U.S. West. The stark black and white cover photo of a hiker leaning against gravity to climb lava echoes the contrast between Medberry's marathon health and lava stroke. Natural resource issues are rarely as clear cut and the actors, both people and plants, are rarely completely good or evil.

This book is worth reading if only for the reason that the author wrote it following years of recovering from a massive stroke which could have easily taken his life, and did damage his brain. Set that against the backdrop and metaphorical reference it draws from which involved the author's passionate attempt to preserve a precious western landscape, Idaho's "Craters of the Moon," which, thanks in part to the author, is now a National Monument, and it makes for a great read.It was during a solo hike in preparation for a visit by then Secretary of the Interior to designate Craters as a monument that the author was hit with a stroke, tumbled into a deep crevice in the lava, and layed for hours drifting in and out of consciousness and on the edge of life and death while his friends frantically searched for him as darkness fell. That they found him still alive is an incredible story. That the author survived the following weeks even more so and that he then literally taught his own brain to function again is truly remarkable. That he could write a book about it years later is humbling.Medberry's passionate attempt to live and regain his humaness dovetails nicely with his passionate and successful attempt to preserve the equally fragile and endangered landscape he deeply cherished and is inspiring on a deeply personal level. This book is well worth reading.Brad Purdy

A touching memoir by an environmentalist and athletic outdoorsman who has a near-fatal stroke while surveying remote lands slated to become a part of Crater National Monument in Southern Idaho. Medberry's miraculous recovery includes regaining his ability to write, and his book explores the parallel between his personal battle to heal with the campaign to protect the fragile ecosystem of Crater's desolate lava lands. His most powerful passages describe the devastating effects of grazing on the West's natural habitats, but also about the ability for these landscapes to eventually recover and renew.

There are a lot of survival stories set in the wilderness, but this one is unique. Reading Mike Medberry's account of being felled by a stroke in the middle of a waterless, volcanic badland, I felt my own sense of panic rising. Fortunately his companions were able to locate him -- but there the real story begins. Medberry describes the agonizingly slow process of recovery with humor and insight, without flinching from the problems it caused for his relationships, his finances, even his sense of self. He returns to the wild landscape of Craters of the Moon to seek a grounding in this seemingly barren, but actually quite lively place. I appreciated that he doesn't go gonzo with the metaphors like some writers--it's an honest story, well told. Through it all Medberry's passion for life and for the land comes through. One of the more interesting books I've read in a while.
